Despite a few disagreements I have with Tom about his last post (see comments), we are definitely on the same page when it comes to our distaste for the cheap-and-easy shock of the full-frontal. (And sure, sometimes censorship regulations can inspire creativity.)
The full monty in “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” is, from what I’ve read, part of some forgettable gag. But back when Hollywood didn’t just drop trow but actually attempted to symbolize something masculine, strong, and heroic—the phallic—it was capable of some pretty powerful cinema. Check out this classic scene from King Vidor’s “Fountainhead”.
