Paul Gottfried responded to my response, suggesting:

No. I presented some data which might be interpreted in a manner which suggests that the public is becoming less ignorant, or no more ignorant, than they were in the past. In other words, I was responding more to data than the inferences from those data, and suggesting a counter-narrative to Declinism. Though to be honest I would have been highly surprised if Paul Gottfried was a biblical-literalist, but that is because of what I have seen in Dr. Gottfried’s body of work, not that specific article.
