The Persian Embarrassment

The seizure of the British Royal Marines and sailors by Iran was always a no brainer. To Iran, Tony Blair is a lame duck, and the British people believe in their government as much as the Americans believed that Bill Clinton did not have sex with that woman. Few Brits accepted their Government’s story that their boats were in Iraqi waters.

Ron Paul: The Conscience of Conservatism

He’s the conscience of the Republican party, or, at least, of its conservative wing “€“ a reminder of the good old days, when being a right-wing GOPer meant never having to say you voted to raise taxes, or to increase the size of Big Government. When it meant a prudential foreign policy, rather than a Jacobin one rooted in recklessness. Rep. Paul remembers those days, and his campaign for the White House is based in large part on a conscious effort to revive this nearly-forgotten conservative tradition.

Catastrophic Farce”€”How We Learned to Stop Worrying About National Interest…

Rather as God cares about every sparrow that falls to earth, no crisis anywhere escapes the attention of the U.S. government. So it has been with the Russo-Georgian war. Words continue to flood forth from Washington”€”Georgia stands for freedom and democracy, Russia must be punished, Abkhazia and South Ossetia are part of Georgia, the U.S. and Europe must stand by Tbilisi. “€œNATO intends to support the territorial integrity, independence, and sovereignty of Georgia, and to support its democratically elected government,”€ Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice gravely intoned. “€œThis NATO which has come so far in a Europe that is whole, free, and at peace is not going to permit a new line to be drawn in Europe,”€ she added, apparently referring to Georgia, even though it lies far outside Europe. Rice also called the statement on the conflict issued by the NATO members”€™ foreign ministers a “€œclear indication of NATO’s interest and NATO’s concern.”€ Yes, it was”€”in ways she didn”€™t anticipate. Moscow’s response was a sneer and an insult. NATO then did precisely nothing.
