If Scotland is so independent, it should try merging with Argentina. Scots need to take another look at their passports. It doesn’t say “€œScotland.”€ It says, “€œUnited Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.”€ The Scots don”€™t have embassies in other countries. They print their own money but it’s just English notes with Scottish pictures on them. Don”€™t the Scots think it’s unusual that every time they check the exchange rate the Scottish pound is at exactly the same rate as the English pound? Scotland has a Parliament but it’s another token gesture London bequeathed to them. “€œIt’s Scotland’s Oil“€ was a big Scottish National Party slogan back in the 1970s, but if their Parliament ever tried to keep the profits for themselves London would politely send in the Army to make it clear whose oil it really is.

When I was checking the weather online before a recent visit, I was shocked to see Scotland pop up between Saudi Arabia and Senegal. My first thought was, “€œScotland’s duped the world into thinking they”€™re a country,”€ but then I realized it was London that was doing the duping. Scotland should be as angry as Northern Ireland. They should be as angry as the Parti Québécois. Britain is not great. “€œFuck England.”€ I taught my kids “€œThe Flower of Scotland”€ and almost bawl my eyes out when I hear them sing,

The hills are bare now,
And autumn leaves lie thick and still
O’er land that is lost now
Which those so dearly held
That stood against him
Proud Edward’s army
And sent him homeward
Tae think again.

Those days are past now
And in the past they must remain
But we can still rise now
And be the nation again!

Scotland needs to stop pretending we”€™re a nation. We did send King Edward home “€œtae think again,”€ but we all saw Braveheart and we know how that ended. The English returned and that land is lost now. In a desperate attempt to make everyone feel better about themselves, we have stripped the word “€œcountry”€ of its meaning. The word should be restricted to mean “€œsovereign state.”€ A great nation isn”€™t placated with token gestures. A great nation fights for true independence until they get it.

I wish the lady on the TV was right and the UK”€”which consists of England and three of its colonies”€”really were independent countries. I wish every state in the Union would secede and every province in Canada was its own country, too. The more independence you have, the less chance there is for tyranny.
