Don Quixote and Sancho Panzo

Don Quixote and Sancho Panzo

In today’s world, Vladimir Nabokov would abandon a literary safari to devote himself exclusively to hunting butterflies.

I feel a bit like a Lolita nymph with a similar boutade, but in my defense I allege that it has a certain foundation: Single-minded fanatics (neo-Marxists, neo-Puritans, neo-teetotalers) intend to murder artistic freedom and dictate a new index of prohibited works.

The latest case to enter this particular Index Prohibitorum has been the film Gone With the Wind, based on the wonderful novel by Margaret Mitchell. The neo-inquisitors denounce the racism of the delicious and frivolous Scarlett O’Hara, the elegant cynicism of Rhett Butler, Mammy’s loyalty and classy servitude. They do so in the name of a very decadent progressivism and camouflage themselves under the dull banner of political correctness, the new dogma and lifeline for those who have no wit.

Of course, their perverse goal goes beyond absurd racist controversy. They seek the same as so many fanatics throughout History in different places: to mold the human mind and to annul all free spirits. Genius, spontaneity, a sense of humor, the blessed difference (“Diversità delle creature, sirena del mondo!” sung by dandy Gabriele d’Annunzio), irony, freedom—the joy of life, in short, is the great enemy of all totalitarianism that seeks to dictate the lives of others.

Does such an attempt to idiotize the world really surprise us? Only a few years ago they charged Mark Twain and banned Huckleberry Finn in some schools in the United States. In Spain, a socialist minister—surely she never read Lolita—went so far as to say that Gabriel García Márquez encouraged pedophilia in his novel Memories of My Melancholy Whores. Another went on to say, with idiotic reasoning and the false argument that it brings civilizations closer together, that Cervantes was invited by his Arab friends to Algiers. (Cervantes had participated in the battle of Lepanto, where he lost an arm, and was then a prisoner and slave for five years in the Baños de Argel. After many escape attempts, he was exchanged and was able to return to Spain and write Don Quixote. He probably made some Moorish friends during his long captivity, but he certainly was not in Algiers of his own free will.) In France, the anti-tobacco Taliban replaced Jacques Tati’s iconic pipe with a lollipop. In England, the adventures of Tintin in the Congo were banned because of racism. I don’t know what happened to the adventures of Tarzan and the Apes…

“Single-minded fanatics intend to murder artistic freedom and dictate a new index of prohibited works.”

This New PC Index reminds me of the Index Librorum Prohibitorum that the Inquisition established in 1559, in the midst of the Counter-Reformation, under the pretext: “It is not convenient for certain things to be accessible in vulgar language.” There were so many good books that were banned that many writers secretly aspired to be on the Index. As time went by, the Index began losing influence, as if it was just a venial peccadillo. The Index was suppressed by Pope Paul VI in 1966. But the forbidden books (of several authors like Boccaccio, Giordano Bruno, Copernicus, Montaigne, Voltaire, Dumas, Balzac, Goethe, Byron, Sade…) could always be read with much more ease than those of Ayn Rand, Orwell, or Huxley in the countries of communist orbit.

And now (in the 21st century!), we have a new index of what is good or bad according to PC. Its creed consists in offending no one’s sensibilities; it aspires to create a new morality, and that is why it appeals to the lowest common denominator.

It seems to me that such an index has very thin skin compared with criticism, but it absolutely lacks artistic sensitivity. But art is not their mission; theirs is to reeducate society so that people cannot reason clearly and freely by themselves, so that they are sheep of a single bleat, without personal criteria.

In the new politically correct index, art must have a social message and literature must be propaganda. What a bore!

Dear Lolita, be a good girl and bring me the butterfly net.
