Riyadh on the Potomac

Americans do not have to fear the imposition of Islamic law in the United States”€”not because Muslims here have no interest in establishing sharia but because, when sharia comes to the United States, it will come democratically. The Constitution, Dr. Khalid Siddiqui explained, is a “pure Islamic document,” and he detailed how Muslim doctors such as himself would be able to frame the debate over, say, a nationwide ban on the sale and consumption of alcohol purely in terms of health. Ditto with tobacco, and with pork.

Mutual Assured Damnation

Throughout the war in Iraq, we have heard rumors of the possible use of “€œtactical nuclear strikes.”€ As the Bush administration (without even the pretense of congressional approval) prepares to expand the war into Iran, ostensibly to prevent Iran from developing her own nuclear weapons, officials refuse to take the “€œnuclear option”€ off of the table.

God, Science, and Telepathic Pets

Do your pets have telepathy? Mine don”€™t, and I”€™m a little disappointed. Because many pets do”€”close to half of dogs and 1/3 of cats, according to iconoclast British scientist Rupert Sheldrake, author of Dogs That Know When Their Owners Are Coming Home, and several other daring works in scientific theory.

The New British McCarthyism

The New British McCarthyism

Most Americans are unaware of it, but in the country which gave birth to the rights which they take for granted, the home of the Magna Charta and the Mother of Parliaments, free speech is not what it used to be. Under the seemingly innocuous guise of preventing racial violence, the British government in 1976 passed the Race Relations Act, which made it a crime to “€œincite racial hatred.”€ Students of bureaucracy will not be surprised to learn that the definition of “€œincite”€ and “€œracial hatred”€ used in enforcing this law has proved extremely elastic”€”and served as a tool for government functionaries and activists to suppress legitimate debate.

Persecuting Putin

Persecuting Putin

Since his rise to the Russian presidency in late 1999, Vladimir Putin has represented to the Western media and political class an infuriating obstacle that needs to be removed and a kind of politics that they regard as utterly abhorrent. Increasingly savage criticisms of Putin and his regime have over the past 4-5 years flooded the pages of a certain kind of putatively conservative magazine and newspaper”€”periodicals which evinced little interest in Russia when it was being misgoverned by the inebriated Boris Yeltsin, and looted by the Communist kleptocrats he put in charge of “€œprivatizing”€ (i.e. confiscating) its massive state enterprises…

An Amnesty From Hell

An Amnesty From Hell

Dear Wordworm, I received your recent note, which was rife with glee as you reflected on the ongoing string of statements made by American Catholic bishops and lay politicians in support of unregulated immigration into that country. You positively gloated at the temporary alliance of the Enemy’s most short-sighted clerics with politicians who are so thoroughly in our pocket that at times “€œone almost forgets that they are not yet in Hell, but still technically alive”€”€”all united in flagrant contempt for laws which are at once just, necessary, and prudent. You chortled like an apprentice tempter at this ménage, in particular at the bold pretence that flooding a country already unfriendly towards the unskilled and the unlucky with millions more strong backs and willing hands to drive down wages was an act of “€œcompassion”€ on behalf of the Enemy’s poor…

A Gratifying Response

Well, the responses have begun to come in to our newly-launched site, and we are deeply gratified at the number of positive comments we have received”€”not ALL of them from Taki’s friends in the Vendee. It’s apparent that the range of debate on the Right has been artificially narrowed for far too long, and that many thoughtful conservatives crave an honest debate on the future of their political tendency (as a “€œMovement”€ it is almost already dead)…

Thanks to the Neocons

I daresay that the vice of rashness has pervaded much of the conservative movement in America (as it once did right-wing movements in Europe). In fact, it has almost destroyed that movement. I challenge the reader to visit a public library and go through old numbers of long-standing conservative magazines, and compare the essays they published 30 or 20 years ago, to the sort of thing they are pumping through the editorial pipes today. The experience, I must warn you, will prove depressing.

Crunchy Calumny

Success has many fathers, but failure is an orphan. This explains why so many of those who leapt on the bandwagon, or led the parade, that marched American soldiers off to war in Iraq are now disclaiming paternity, or screaming for blood tests. (No matter that many of these same folks are priming the pumps for yet another war with Iran, using the same sort of dreary agitprop that lied us into the last one.) One particularly juicy case is that of blogger and author Rod Dreher…

National Socialism and National Greatness

Conservatism used to mean anti-statism. But today, under the rubric of neoconservatism, this has been stood on its head. It is a Bizarro World conservatism, where the individualism of Barry Goldwater and Frank S. Meyer has given way to the militarized groupthink of David Frum and the Dittohead demagoguery of Rush Limbaugh.
